Remember that acquaintance who was “stuck in the 80’s”?
Being stuck in a style era can get us noticed for the wrong reasons, but why is that?
What we wear tells others how to treat us, and an out-of-date appearance labels us as much as the best-before date on a package of food. Yet at some point, many of us end up parked in the garage of our style comfort zone. This happens easily, our lives are busy, and scouring fashion magazines, or shopping malls for that matter, tends to slide down our priority list. Getting back up to speed may seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be.
Staying current doesn’t mean you should adopt every extreme fashion trend going, in fact, that is something I would highly discourage. Rather, it means being aware of the evolving fits, colours and accessories, and picking out the ones that suit your body type, colouring and the personal brand you wish to project. A good stylist or personal shopper can be very helpful when you lack the confidence or time to do this yourself. Fashion magazines & sites are a good source to keep abreast of the trends, but need to be used together with a good knowledge of what truly suits you.
The truth is you have so much to contribute – go out there and show the world how valuable you truly are!
To get things started, here are 5 key trends to be aware of:
- The natural waist is back – if you have a waist forget dated low rise jeans and show it off in rises that come up to where you bend at the waist.
- Relaxed fits with more room – choose looser fit jackets, trousers and jeans- there are cuts for every shape. Don’t over-do it in an oversized cut if you are Petite.
- Pointy and almond shaped toes for shoes – sturdy or stiletto heels – your choice
- Sensible bags – medium sized handbags with practical straps or smaller ones worn around waists
- Mid lengths – somewhere between knee and ankle – skirts and crop trousers a bit above the ankle or below the knee are a nice easy update that will suit many.
